ANNOUNCING:
I will NOT be
running for president
|
Recently
a delightful New York Post reporter
me asked "Why don't you be our President?"
Several callers on talk shows said the
same thing so I actually gave it some
thought. After all, I pondered, "anyone
could do better than what we have."
After
due consideration, however, I have decided
not to stand for the Presidency for
the following reasons:
1.
I hate getting
dressed-up. Can you see me,
at White House events, in my cords and
sweat shirt? The staff would go crazy
as Nikes replaced Nun-Bush and tuxedos
bowed to "T" shirts. Imagine the inauguration
with me in my jeans.
2.
My most creative
work is done naked (not really).
I have this 20 year-old robe, its thread
bare, one arm hangs by an inch of cloth,
and it sports two holes in the side.
From five to ten in the morning, I live
in this thing, talk to the entire world
via radio and write volumes (it's currently
4:39 a.m.). Can't you picture the reaction
to staffers as I parade around the West
Wing in my robe and slippers? And then,
there's the press core!
3.
I am too consistent
in what I say and do. Politicians,
even the good ones (Lincoln, Douglas,
Eisenhower...), tell different stories
in different towns often in the same
day. Lincoln spoke against slavery in
Chicago and almost favored it in Cairo.
Unfortunately, by Reagan's time the
TV caught the "Gipper" in swing talk
favoring Farm Subsidies in Iowa and
denouncing the
|
same in Philadelphia within hours
of each other. I study an issue, seek
input, pray, reexamine, and then make
my decision. I tell everyone, every
where the same thing. I attempt to
always "say what I do and do what
I say" - that won't be popular!
4.
I can't stomach
a liar. When I was a child
of ten, I would tell the tallest tales
and think it fun. Thank God I was
caught by family and friends and was
publicly humiliated. That did it.
Under
girding, this as a Christian and student
of scripture, I sense God's contempt
for a liar, this because they do much
damage. Note Iraq (2003-7) and Haiti
(2001-04) - 124,000 dead, another
250,000 maimed, rape, torture, and
kidnappings. I have observed over
the past six years that in order to
be President, evidently, you must
be willing to lie endlessly knowing
that each time you utter a word thousands
die, communities go up in flames,
and the integrity of the greatest
nation in history is tanked for decades
to come.
5.
Then there's
God. Jesus asked "what
price will a man put on his soul,
for how much will he sell it?" (Mk.
8:36-37) It is obvious to the entire
world that the current President has
long passed the "going price" and
shall not see the kingdom of Heaven.
(Rev. 22:15) Sorry you can keep the
job.
For these reasons, I therefore must
decline your kind invitation to be
your President. George W. Bush leaves
behind an office, country, and world
far more damaged than my old robe
- For God's Sake.
