Roustabouting
Hell-of-a-mess or Heavenly will?

During my first career as a Law Enforcement Officer, I'd witness police treat detainees violently. Suspects were handcuffed to hot radiators or hit with weapons that left no marks. Our chief was known as "rubber hose Harry." The idea was to push the prisoner into fighting back affording the officers the right to beat the detainees to shreds. The practice was called "ROUSTABOUTING."

Historically people holding power came to realized that Isaac Newton's laws of motion apply to human behavior as well as the physical world:

  1. If left alone an object won't move,
  2. If touched or pushed by an outside force the object will react, and
  3. "For every action there is an Opposite and Equal Reaction."

Rubber hose Harry, knew nothing of Newton, but he and other rulers of society realized if they led their followers to throw a rock over the fence, that those "others" will throw one back, then we are allowed to throw two rocks back. The number of rocks escalates until somebody kicks down the fence, invades the "others" land, burning their homes, destroying infrastructure, raping their women and killing their young. Sound familiar?

From the beginning "rock throwers" invoked the blessing of their Creator and Spiritual Guides: God, Allah, Jesus, Krishna, Jehovah, or whoever, to sanctify their aggression and rally their people to kill other people.

Today's U.S. government, aided by churches, plays this morose game

resulting in the wholesale butchering of humans beings. Both join in a worldwide effort to manipulate other nations into hellish barbarism just to satisfy our lust for oil and cheap bananas.

The fire of war is fanned by false prophets like John Hagee and Pat Robertson and thousands of local churches who mindlessly push Israel to oblivion, not for Israel's sake, but to manipulate God into returning Jesus to earth after the great battle. Congregations orchestrate near erotic worship before images of Jesus and George Bush sending thousands of their young to slaughter and be slaughtered while ignorant, uneducated preachers yell "glory to God." We even send them to poor little Haiti with their lethal mission.

There is but one God manifesting to all people in different ways. This one creator God made this world and all who live upon it. God NEVER wills the destruction of that creation by the created.

Americans avoid noticing the "roustabouting" of weaker peoples by WE the powerful. We ignore the resulting war and carnage, because of our greed and desire for cheap goods. We sit in our churches with the flag next to the cross assuring ourselves that our all powerful God will bless our all powerful nation as we beat up the world.

Remember old "rubber hose?" In 1988 the state took over that local police department. Harry and two of his brothers went to prison and the rest of the officers were fired. God is Justice - American believers of every religion must demand it OF ourselves.

Dr. Britt Minshall is the author of Ring of Angels, a book that covers the political and social climate in Haiti and Senior Pastor of the Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew, a United Church of Christ. He is also a former INTERPOL officer.
